Rent a VPS

Virtual private servers are the cheapest way to run a small app, a staging environment or a side project. Prices start at a few dollars a month, and the gap between the cheapest and the median provider is large.

What the price differences mean

The spread is wide: the cheapest 8 vCPU plans cost a tenth of the market median. Low-cost providers often oversubscribe CPUs, so performance under sustained load can vary. Hyperscaler VMs cost more but come with managed networking, snapshots and an ecosystem of services.

When a VPS is the right choice

  • Small web apps, APIs and bots with modest traffic.
  • Staging and test environments.
  • Self-hosted tools such as VPNs, n8n, Git servers or monitoring.
  • Small game servers for a handful of players.

When to move to dedicated

If you're running several large VPS instances at steady load, or you need consistent CPU performance, a dedicated server is often cheaper and faster. See dedicated vs VPS vs cloud.

What to check

  • CPU type: shared or dedicated vCPUs.
  • Disk: NVMe, and whether backups or snapshots are included.
  • Traffic: included transfer and overage price.
  • Location: close to your users.
