Rent High-Memory Dedicated Servers for Databases and Analytics

Some workloads are limited by memory, not CPU: large PostgreSQL or MySQL instances, Redis and Valkey caches, ClickHouse and other analytics engines. High-memory dedicated servers keep the whole working set in RAM.

What to specify

  • Memory size and speed: 256 GB to 1 TB+ of ECC DDR5 is common in current platforms.
  • CPU sockets: dual-socket servers double memory channels but add NUMA considerations for databases.
  • Storage: fast NVMe for write-ahead logs and spill.
  • Replication: a second server in another facility for failover.

Sizing tip

Measure your working set (the data touched in a typical hour) rather than total database size. Size RAM to hold the working set plus headroom for connections and the OS.
