Typical uses
- Backup targets for Veeam, restic or Borg.
- Self-hosted S3-compatible object storage with MinIO or Ceph.
- Media libraries and archives that are read occasionally but must stay online.
What to specify
- Raw capacity and drive count: more, smaller drives rebuild faster after a failure.
- RAID or erasure coding: hardware RAID controller or software (ZFS, mdadm).
- Network: backup windows are usually limited by port speed, so ask about 10 Gbps options.
- Drive replacement: how quickly failed disks are swapped, and whether it's hot-swap.
Compared with object storage
Cloud object storage is simpler to operate and scales without planning. A storage server costs less per terabyte at scale and has no per-request or egress fees, but you run the software and plan capacity yourself.
