Why it matters in 2026
TrendForce forecast in September 2026 that conventional DRAM contract prices would rise another 10 to 15% and NAND flash 15 to 20% quarter over quarter in the fourth quarter of 2026, with server DRAM still undersupplied. Higher new prices push buyers to the secondary market, so test everything on arrival.
NVMe drives
- Wear:
nvme smart-log /dev/nvme0shows percentage_used, data written, media_errors and critical_warning. Ask for these before buying; reject drives with media errors or a critical warning. - Endurance: compare data written to the drive's rated endurance (drive writes per day over the warranty period).
- Form factor: U.2, U.3, E1.S, E3.S and M.2 are not interchangeable. Match the server's backplane.
- Firmware: OEM-branded drives may carry firmware that only the OEM updates. Confirm the version and the update path.
- Sanitization: a crypto-erase or sanitize certificate from the seller, then run your own secure erase.
RDIMMs (server memory)
- Type: DDR5 RDIMM is not interchangeable with DDR4, with LRDIMM in the same channel, or with unbuffered DIMMs.
- Match: keep capacity, rank, speed and ideally the same part number within each channel, and populate per the server vendor's guide.
- Verify:
dmidecode -t memoryfor part numbers and speed; several passes of a memory test; then watch ECC counters (edac-utilor the BMC log) under load. - Relabeled modules: the label should match the SPD data the system reads. A mismatch is a reason to return the lot.
Network cards
- Model and speed: confirm the exact model, port count and speed (100, 200 or 400 Gb/s) and whether it supports InfiniBand, Ethernet or both.
- Firmware and OEM locks: OEM cards can carry a board ID that blocks standard firmware. Check the board ID and firmware version with the vendor's tools before you buy.
- Test: link at full speed with
ethtooloribstat, and run a bandwidth test between two hosts.
Optics and cables
- Form factor and standard: QSFP28, QSFP56, QSFP112 and OSFP modules, and SR, DR or FR reach, must match on both ends.
- Coding: switches may only accept modules coded for them. Ask for the coding before ordering.
- Diagnostics:
ethtool -m <interface>shows temperature and transmit and receive power. Compare against the module's specification. - Clean every connector before use; dirty MPO connectors cause most link errors.
- Cables: passive copper is cheapest for a few meters; active optical cables for longer runs inside a row.
Protect yourself
- Written return terms: at least 30 days, with the seller paying return shipping on failed parts.
- Serial numbers listed on the invoice.
- Test on arrival and log results before parts go into production.
- Prefer sellers who test and grade parts and state the grading criteria.
Questions
Is used server memory safe to buy?
Usually, if it is tested on arrival and matched correctly. Check part numbers against the SPD data, run several memory test passes and watch ECC counters under load. Return any module that logs errors.
How do I check the health of a used NVMe drive?
Run nvme smart-log and look at percentage_used, media_errors and critical_warning. Reject drives with media errors or a critical warning, and compare data written with the drive's rated endurance.
Will any QSFP module work in my switch?
Not always. Many switches only accept modules coded for them. Confirm the switch's coding requirement, the form factor and the reach standard before ordering.
